In 1996, for the 1997 model year, a Hyundai sports coupe unlike any other sped onto the scene. It was the Hyundai Tiburon, and its name, a variation on the Spanish term for "shark," would define just how aggressively fun the sports car was, for two generations.
The model ran as the RD Tiburon from 1996 to 1999, when an RD2 would join it, until 2001. The car would feature that eye-catching styling that was such a popular mainstay of 1960s and 1970s sports cars: the "Coke bottle" design. There would then be a larger GK Tiburon, which ran from 2003 to 2008, complete with new styling and a V6 engine option, as well as a Special Edition-badged GT V6, which would appear in 2004. By the coupe's 2005 facelift, it would also feature GS, GT, and SE trims, and an upgraded GT Limited model would appear in 2006, just before another facelift in 2007. When it was replaced by the Hyundai Veloster in 2008, it would leave behind a heritage.
